Excuses Not To Take Medicine From a 3 Year Old

by Leila on February 1, 2011

My son has this weird thing where he likes to take medicine all the time. He will dramatically come to me with some random injury that he has to be treated for and needs medicine. I jokingly call him the little hypochondriac (Not to his face of course. That would be wrong. I just talk about it on the internet instead). The kids have been insanely sick the past few days and it just sucks donkey balls. They started out with a stomach flu and  my daughter ended up with gnarly indigestion issues and my son has developed some respiratory problems with a super high fever that just won’t freaking go away. Now when he needs to take medicine the most… he won’t. Is there a damn Contrarian Zodiac sign?

Anyway, his excuses to not take his medicine have been hilarious!

The typical excuses…

“Mommy, I’m too tired to take it!”

“That tastes yucky!”

“I don’t like it!”

And then the uber excuses…

“My mouth is tired.”

“I’m allergic to that!”

“Okay fine I’m not allergic but I will be if I have to take it!”

“I WOULD RATHER EAT POOP!”

“My ears went to sleep… they can’t hear you.”

“DUDE! GET IT AWAY!”

“IF I SAY THANK YOU AND PLEASE WILL YOU JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!?”

“Shhh.. I’m too tired to argue so lets just say no”

“If you make me do it I might not like you anymore.”

“It tastes bad. It makes my mouth feel bad. So its BAD!”

“You are making me want to say a bad word!”

“Huh?! What?! I am busy not taking that medicine.”

“My belly is too full for that”

And finally…

“I’m just going to spit it out again… then I will cry… then you will make the mad face… then I will tell you I love you and ask you to scratch my back… then I will just go to sleep. Just let me sleep!”

Funny, my 2yo was the same way about medicine. She always wanted to take tylenol and ibuprophen.

Then we got this great flu and she wouldn’t take anything. “No medicine momma, no.”

It’s funny how they always want to do the opposite of what they should! My son is the same way… he just always wants to take medicine unless he needs it!

I kind of feel bad for laughing at his excuses. But, I’m totally laughing. I hope your little ones feel better soon.

Bahahahahaha!

“You are making me want to say a bad word!”

and my favorite:

“If you make me do it I might not like you anymore.”

Your son is awesome. Even when he’s sick. I hope the kids get better soon!

That last excuse is hysterical!

I have the opposite problem. My kids LOVE medicine and demand it at all times. Its my fault, I am a nurse I tend to medicate them for everything. But come one, a paper cut will not get you vicodin.

I found your blog through twitter. Love it. :)

I’m glad you stopped by! If the medicine is benadryl or anything grape flavor he loves it… he now boycotts cherry!

Love it! Gotta give him points for being clever and creative! Astroboy is sick, too…of course now we all have it…and we seem much more miserable than he does! *sigh*

Sorry to hear everyone is sick! I got a mild tummy thing but it was no where near how sick the kids were.

I’m already loving the SITS 31DBBB Challenge! I love your site design by the way!

I know it isn’t nice to laugh, but those are priceless. Since I have an almost 2 year old I know some of those excuses are on the horizon for me.

i laughed my arse off reading this because i had this same discussion with Luke the other day about his “coughs”…he was insisting so he could have cough stuff and making these fake coughs and arguing “but i have coughs” when i told him he hadn’t coughed once all day…kids:)
